In E-Commerce websites category pages, we often come across a page heading followed by product listings and then a big chunk of text at the bottom.

So, is it a good practice?

Obviously NO.

We all know this answer as this is not a standard optimization practice for category pages. But still, many e-commerce websites are following this format to get ranking for category pages.

Thus, let’s just get some more clarity regarding this from the search engine giant Google.

In the recent, Google Webmaster Central office-hours hangout, Google’s John Mueller was asked about this.

In its reply, John advised webmasters to not follow the above optimization technique. Instead he clearly advised to

  • Make sure that those pages are well integrated with your website so that we have clear context of how those pages should belong to the website and what those pages are about.
  • For listing of products, make sure that there’s some information on those listings so that we could understand what this page is about.
  • Use alt text for the images.
  • Have captions below the images.
  • Instead of giant block of text at the bottom, try shifting them into maybe one or two sentences that you can place above the fold below the heading.

Therefore, these recommendations by Google for category pages of E-Commerce websites should be followed for better ranking.
