Recently, Google’s John Mueller was asked by Sachin Khanna to share some useful tips on how to rank images on Google. You can check the video “Image Search Rankinghere in Google Webmasters YouTube channel.

In this video, John Mueller advised webmasters to not just optimize images because they exist, rather do it with a specific goal in mind. To get better clarity of your goal, simply consider these 3 questions.

  1. How you want to be found in image search?
  2. What you expect users to search for? And,
  3. How can your site be useful to them when they find you?

  • Use high quality images.
  • Place those images in a relevant and visible way in your page.
  • Use great titles on the pages themselves.
  • Provide useful alt attributes for the images.
  • Potentially add captions to your images.
  • Pick descriptive/good filenames for your images.
  • Host your images in a way that they’re fast for your users.
