On 21st Jan 2022, Google introduced a new robots tag named indexifembedded. This new robots tag works in combination with the noindex tag only when the page with noindex tag is embedded through iframes and similar HTML tags in other pages. Presently, Google is the only search engine supporting this tag.

Google on the launch of this tag mentioned that this tag is going to address a common issue that mainly affects media publishers.

Let’s understand the main purpose of this tag and how it can be useful.

This tag enables you to inform Google that even your page is set to noindex yet Google can index the content of your page if the page is embedded through iframes and similar HTML tags like objects in other pages.

Let’s take one example.

Suppose, you have a page https://www.example.com/media/podcast=135 and you don’t want Google to index this page so you have placed a noindex tag in this page. But, if you want Google to index the content of your page when your page gets embedded in any other page then here, you have to use indexifembedded tag.

How to use this tag?

You can use this tag either in combination with the noindex tag or by specifying the tag in the http header itself.
